When?
The French and French Canadian people migrated to the United States for very similar reasons. During the French Revolution (1789-1799), some 10,000 political refugees escaped to the United States. Mostly by way of the French Colonies in the Caribbean. During the Californian Gold Rush of 1849-1850, over three thousand immigrants came from France. Overall, throughout history there have been numerous waves of immigrants from French Canadians and French people.
Stereotypes and attitude towards Immigrants.

French people were often times discriminated against and had the stereotype of being sneaky and deceptive. Being that they came during the gold rush, they were thought to be money hungry thieves who would do anything for a chance at wealth. The French were also considered untrustworthy.

Generally, the French stuck together at many immigrant groups did. In the 1870s and the 1880s, they mostly lived in places like New York, where their jobs as factory workers were close by. Some of the French Canadians settled in northern New England to work on various farms and mills. Like many immigrant workers, they took the jobs that others refused, such as factory jobs, cleaning homes and other hard labor.

French Representation
Today the French do not especially hold much power in the country. There has not been a French or French Canadian President. But the French have gained some power especially in Rhode Island. Now, Woonsocket political power in the Rhode Island house and senate. Fernand St. Germain was an Rhode Island representative who has French ancestry. He served thirteen consecutive terms which equals 26 years in the United States house of Representatives. The fortunes turned for the French immigrants after new immigrants started arriving to the United States. The focus moved from the French Immigrants so they were treated more fairly.
